Eid-el-Fitri: Boko Haram, other groups targeting Lagos hotels, waterfronts – US

A leader of militia hunters helping the army to fight the Boko Haram insurgence in the northeast region of Nigeria, holds a magazine of bullets in his hands during an interview in Yola, Adamawa State January 14, 2015. Boko Haram says it is building an Islamic state that will revive the glory days of northern Nigeria’s medieval Muslim empires, but for those in its territory life is a litany of killings, kidnappings, hunger and economic collapse. Slowly, with the help of traditional hunters armed with home made guns and a reputation for magic powers, government forces have pushed Boko Haram out of some of its southern possessions.

The United States on Tuesday issued a warning on impending attacks on locations in Lagos where foreigners usually gather.

The US Mission in Nigeria, in a statement on its website, said terror groups planned to attack hotels and waterfronts visited by expatriates during the Eid-el-Fitri holiday, now extended till Thursday.

“The US Mission in Nigeria advises that groups associated with terrorist activities might be planning attacks on hotels in Lagos frequented by international visitors, including those located on waterfronts, during the Eid-el-Fitr holidays,” it reads.

“The US Mission in Nigeria reminds you to review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security”, it added.

In an apparent reaction to the US warning, Lagos State Police command in by its spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos, assured that the police would ensure maximum protection of lives during the Eid-el-Fitri.

“Adequate and necessary measures have been put in place during and after the Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

“Furthermore, operational strategies have been devised to ensure hitch-free celebrations around all praying grounds, recreational centres, hotels and other public places”, she noted.
