5 bizarre rituals African ‘pastors’ perform in the name of religion

African pastors have recently become popular for all the wrong reasons. They are now more known for their extravagant and luxurious lifestyles than for preaching the word of God.

In their quest for this life, many have resorted to bizarre rituals of ‘healing’ and ‘luring’ more people to their churches.  Just recently, news that a South African pastor,  Prophet Rufus Phala, made his congregation drink Jik bleach has been going viral on social media. Six people have died as a result of this act.

It is not the first time Phala has been in the news. In 2016, he made the congregation drink Dettol and even the uproar from the public did not stop him as he was seen just weeks later buying more bottles of Dettol.

Beating up people and forcing them to eat animals including rats and snakes

Penuel Mnguni is a South Africa pastor who came to the limelight for forcing the members of his church to eat grass, swallow snake and even strip naked. When his acts came to light, youth in his village burnt down his church and have since stopped him from setting up a new branch of the church.

Forcing people to eat grass

Pastor Lesego Daniel, also from South Africa, is known for his ‘miracle’ of making churchgoers eat grass as a sign of their devotion. He believes that the move takes worshippers close to God.

Lesego has also been in the headlines for bringing snakes into the church as part of his service.

‘Heavenly’ selfies

Paseka Motsoeneng, a self-styled prophet from South Africa, claimed that he had taken photos in heaven, where he was taken by angels.

“I was then taken for a tour around the magnificent cities of heaven. I even took pictures on my smartphone and came back down later that same day,” the pastor claimed.

To see this photo, the churchgoers were required to pay a substantial amount of money.
