"David retorted to Michal, 'I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the LORD, so I celebrate before the LORD . Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!' So Michal, the daughter of Saul, remained childless throughout her entire life." (2 Samuel 6: 21-23)
That David loved the Lord is not in doubt. That David was an accomplished, multi-talented, extraordinarily gifted figure is also not in doubt . That David delights in worshiping God is equally one of his profound characteristics. He mentioned it expressly as follows: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). He was so good at doing God’s bidding that Paul said concerning him, “And when he had removed [Saul], he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will." (Acts 13:22).
Like David we are also multifaceted, we play many roles. But the question the Holy Spirit wants you to ask yourself is why are you doing what you are doing ? Why did David do all he did? "Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed." ( Acts 13:36). Why did David serve God in his generation so passionately? Why did David dance? Are you dancing also for thy Lord, especially in the public?
In 1 Samuel chapter 16,God showed us why he chose David and preferred him above his 7 brothers - he was looking at the motive of men, not their psyche in making choices . What will God choose you for today looking at your heart. Beyond all you are putting up for the public to see, will God prefer you above your contemporaries after looking at your heart? Let us look at some reasons, based on David's example of dancing for God, why God might choose to do so. Hopefully that will ginger you to spend the rest of your days dancing for God almighty.
1. God gave you the opportunity .
God chose you above those who were given opportunities and they missed used it. That is why you must never take God for granted . Because as they say, the cane that they used to whip the first wife and drive her out for you to become the latest wife is securely kept, perhaps you will misbehave
2. God made you a leader.
Paul says :”And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;” (1 Tim 2:12). Leadership is about influence. As a leader God expects you to show a godly example of learning to praise and worship him by dancing for him. David was showing that being a king is not a hindrance to dancing for God. Never get to a position that you are ashamed to dance for God. After all, you cannot get to any position without God’s approval.
3. God choose to favour you.
God loves everybody but has a preference for some people, call it doctrine of election, call it mercy, but you cannot take that out of God. “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” (Act 9:16). David said "I am dancing because God preferred me, choose me above your father". May thy Lord choose you above many to dance for him in this generation.
4. Who else will you dance for if not God?
It's like David saying : if I don’t dance for God who will I dance for - devil? If you don’t dance for God you will dance for the devil . That is why I decry the kind of erotic and nonsensical music that this generation of musician are composing. Music that gratifies the flesh and not God. Where are the hymns our father sang- Take my life and let it be? I am pressing on to higher height? Abide with me fast falls the eventide? What a friend we have in Jesus?
5. You are not ashamed.
David said he was willing to look more foolish? Wow! David is saying I am dancing not to impress the crowd but God. My focus of dancing is to make God happy not the onlookers. Let me ask you when you are in church service or that fellowship whom are you dancing for ? God or men? I plead with you, learn to dance for God. From your heart. What I observe today about dancing is that many get to church today and stand like logs of wood. They refuse to dance. They prefer to dance and gyrate when in society parties, but in church they - are - “shy” Sorry for you! Paul said I am not ashamed of the gospel .
6. You are distinguished!
David said - contrary to Michal's opinion that the girls will think he is humiliated- they will rather see him as distinguished! Is that not why you now have the lyrics of the popular song- “When the Spirit of the Lord is upon my soul I will dance like David danced"! Dancing for God honours God. Irrespective of the opinions of people, God deserves to be praised, God has done good for you! Praise him, dance for him honour him with your substance including dancing !
7. To silence your enemy.
When you dance for God, he rewards the dancer and deals with the mockers. Michal remained barren forever. When you genuinely dance for God you are mocking the enemies of God. I remember the story of a man who was running after a young lady to befriend her. The lady said she is already engaged to another man. The man will not take no for an answer. One day the lady said he should come over. He was happy, within himself thinking finally she has agreed to his request. On getting to her house, the lady took him to her fiancé’s house, when they got there, she hugged the fiancé and started kissing him passionately, the other man left immediately!
From today, learn to dance for God to make your enemies mad! To send the Michal’s of your life to their shameful barrenness. Learn today to make God happy and Satan mad with your sophisticated dancing steps. Dance to provoke the devil. Learn today to make yourself happy. God has given you reasons to dance. Then dance. Have you watched how passionately those who are serving masquerades dance as if they are possessed, actually they are demon possessed .Dance because you are possessed by the Holy Ghost. Let us dance for our God. I see you dancing the David dance and even on a higher pedestal as the Holy Spirit gives you the ability. When I was younger I used to dance so well in CAC Bethel Ife, that I was nicknamed Okoto-Jesu. I would spin like a vortex! I wish I can dance like that again. Be Okoto-Jesu for God today.
Shalom
