HOW LONG WILL THIS CONTINUE?: Anguish as Redeemed Church blocks Lagos – Ibadan road for annual convention

It has been a tale of monumental anguish by travelers along the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, with thousands being trapped since yesterday evening as a result of a devastating gridlock caused by the on-going 63rd Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

A Lagos-based journalist, Mr. Tunde Busari, lamented to News Express how he spent the night in the traffic and missed an event billed for last night in Ibadan.

He said in a text message to at 11:44 p.m.: “I had a dinner in Ibadan and left Lagos at six.  Redeemed Church traffic standstill. Only God knows when it would subside. Gov Ambode is also trapped some metres away from me.”

Mr. Busari set another sms at 4:32 a.m., saying: “Still far from Redeemed Church.”  He finally arrived Ibadan a little over an hour ago, announcing via an sms sent at 7:36 a.m.: “Arriving. So sad!”

An RCCG member, Phebean Avwomakpa, who spoke to News Express, said the vigil ended at about 2am and members who came from across the nation started leaving for their various destinations.

“We knew something like this was going to occur. So since we finished the vigil programme at about 2am, we started coming to Ibadan immediately, so that we can beat the traffic,” she said.

The programme started on August 3 and would end tomorrow.
