These 5 household expenses will soon become expensive following the decision of the Nigerian government to increase the pump price of petrol to N145 per litre.

1. Transportation costs
This goes without saying. Expensive petrol equals expensive bus fares, and expensive Uber rides.

2. Food costs
Most of the food consumed in Nigeria are being transported from one region to the other. Pepper, onions, tomato are brought to the South from the North. Garri, rice are produced in one part of the country and transported to other states for consumption. Frozen products, rice and beans are imported into the country, illegally some times. With the cost of transportation going up, the prices of these commodities will definitely become expensive.

3. Electricity costs
It's popular knowledge that Nigeria, armed with a paltry 5000MW electricity generation, suffers from epileptic power supply. To mitigate the power outages, most Nigerians rely on generators, which are run on petrol or diesel.

Following the fuel price increase announcement, reports say some fuel stations pulled out from selling petrol, and diesel altogether. This made diesel more expensive as well.

An increase in petrol price translates to spending more to power the generator.

4. Hair styling costs
The local barber shops and salons mostly use little generators to run their businesses. The fuel price increase will also increase their cost of production. As a result, hair barbers and stylists will increase their fares to recover their capital plus profit.
