N50m Osun Road Started Deteriorating One Month After Construction. Now Fixed After FIJ’s Story

Ibadak Construction Limited, a 2019-registered company located in Lagos State, has repaired some portions of a recently rehabilitated Agbowo Road in the Odo-Ori area of Iwo Local Government in Osun State.

This repair took place after a report by FIJ in July. FIJ had spotlighted how the road deteriorated only a few weeks after the company left the site.

The Federal Ministry of Works funded Agbowo Road’s rehabilitation. Checks by FIJ showed that funds for 78 such roads were provided for in the 2023 budget.

During a visit to the location on Sunday, FIJ observed that new asphalt had been laid on a cracked area of the road on a bridge close to the Iwo slaughterhouse. This was the largest area damaged shortly after the road construction in June.

In a short interview, a commercial motorcyclist at a cross-community garage beside the bridge who identified as Oluwooke told FIJ that those areas were fixed on Friday.

“Some workers from the company came on Friday and applied new asphalt on the damaged portions,” Oluwooke said.

“Before then, they had come about three times to take pictures of the affected areas. We are happy they returned to fix it. This was after so many complaints, though.”

Other smaller damages on the road had also been fixed.

Aside from fixing the affected portions, the contractor had also mounted a road bump on the bridge, possibly to control vehicular weight on that spot.

However, the rainwater channels on both sides of the road which were not fully done in June remained untouched on Friday. This was despite the fact that the rehabilitation was “a special intervention on the effect of flooding” on the area.

When emailed for comment on the original story in July, John Abah Augustine, the company’s lone director, failed to respond. He also did not respond to a message sent to him via Facebook Messenger.
