Having a disability is not a setback for some. If we ponder hard enough, we would realize that there are individuals who have overcome incredible challenges. These tests have served as a catalyst for them to chase their goals with even more fervor.
Here are artists in their respective genres who have refused to let their disabilities derail their dreams.
Darrius Simmons
17-year-old Darrius Simmons was born with two fingers on his right hand while having only one finger on his left hand.
Simmons is a self-taught piano player and composes his own music.
Still honing his craft, he has learned how to play the trombone. Simmons says, “I want to be an inspiration for people. That’s what I want to do when I get older. To prove you can do things when you put your mind to it. That’s really my main goal. To be an inspiration to people.”
Amadou and Miriam
Amadou Bagayoko and Miriam Doumbia are a Malian singing duo who are blind. The couple has been performing together since 1983. Named the “blind couple from Mali,” the married pair is still going strong on the music scene. They released “La Confusion” in 2017 to critical reviews.
Pape Niang
Pape Niang is a Senegalese composer, instrumentalist and musician. Niang has been in the music business for 40 years. He considers himself “handicapable” and advocates for other blind artists in his homeland.
Stevie Wonder
Stevlad Hardaway Morris is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. Signing with Motown records at the age of 11, the musical phenomenon has been blind since birth.
Steve Kekana
Steve Kekana is a South African songwriter and singer. Kekana lost his sight at the age of five. He is also a lecturer at the University of South Africa and a holder of a B Juris and an LLB Degree.
The proof lies right in front of us. If we want something badly enough, we can achieve it.
