I plan to have a talk show —Joro Olumofin

Tell us about on your background

I am the last of four sons and my parents have been married for almost 50 years now. I studied Psychology at the University of Lagos. It’s a broad-based course and it can be applied to everyday life. I focused on industrial psychology then I realised that there were more pressing issues relationship-wise between men and women. I am trying to be the Nigerian love doctor like Steve Harvey.

Do you think Nigerians are ready for that?

Surprisingly, they are. I get a lot of interesting emails and I am surprised how people are willing to share their problems with me.

What do you intend to achieve with this?

I plan to have a talk show, which will also see us re-enact some of the stories we received via email, with the permission of the owners. We will also re-enact it in front of a live audience and I will also be acting. I have my eyes set on Nollywood.

Asides that what else are you into?

I recently dabbled into real estate. My brother is into oil and gas, so we do business together sometimes. Whenever I am not busy working I go to the movies or play basketball.

Some people think you intentionally court controversies

I would not like to comment on that because I can’t control what people think. People who know me know I don’t intentionally court controversies.

How does your course of study apply to your relationship with people?

It helps me listen more to people and when I do so, I can predict their next move. Most people want to talk but if you listen more you will learn more. People think psychology is boring and for old people, so I am trying to do everything possible to erase that faulty notion. That’s why I use fashion and comedy to simplify the process.

But it is believed that most love doctors are unable to handle their own relationships. Does this apply to you?

That is very correct and it does apply to me. Before I started the love doctor series I had relationship issues in the past. I dated a lady for almost five years; she broke my heart. I have yet to recover from it.

So how are you able to counsel people?

When you are not involved in something directly you are able to think objectively. When people send me emails, I can advice them and proffer solutions to their relationship problems based on my past relationships. I am also very sociable so when I go out, I meet and exchange ideas with people. Thankfully, my advices have been effective and put into good use. The emails are real not fictitious.

From experience, what major relationship issues are peculiar to women?

It is the battle against ‘the other woman.’ That is why I am working with a major telecommunications company on my next series, which will be aired on TV. Over 95 per cent of the complaints I receive have to do with infidelity. We must also note that women naturally do not like to share. Men, don’t really feel comfortable sending me emails. They feel they are forced into relationships and these men tend to misbehave because they didn’t want to be in the relationship in the first place.

How do you feel about the impression that you and your brother gatecrash weddings?

I don’t know about that but all I know is that I love going out. I am very social, I love attending weddings and we only attend events when we are invited.

Did your recent spat on social media affect your relationship with Tunde Demuren?

I really do not want to talk about that episode because I have truly put it behind me. The parties involved are no longer talking about it; so if I keep talking about it people may think I am trying to seek relevance and publicity.

Is it really true you were both walked out of Tunde Demuren’s wedding?

Most people felt we were driven from the wedding because they saw us with soldiers. Sometimes, my father gives us security details to accompany us out.

What lessons did you learn or do you regret the episode?

The only thing I can say I regret was my outburst. I have never used such words on a woman. Next time, I would handle such in a more civil manner. More things will happen in the future and I have to be more civil in my conduct.

How would you describe your dress sense?

I love to be different and make a statement at all times. I am not scared to dress out of the box any time. My ideal outfit is suits and I am crazy about shoes.

How do you unwind?

I have some friends who have regular tables at clubs every Friday, but I don’t go to clubs as much as they do. A while back, I was involved in an accident on my way back from the club so I stopped clubbing.

When you decide to marry, will you apply some of your principles to your personal life?

Yes, I will. For now, I’m under so much pressure to marry. People believe relationship experts find it hard to keep relationships, but I can’t afford to cheat on my wife because it will mean going contrary against what I preach.

Who is your ideal woman?

I need someone who will be able to manage my lifestyle and the pressure that comes with getting married to me. I won’t want her to be in the limelight.

style as different, bold and colourful.
