Several musicians have received severe sanctions, such as lifetime bans for improper words or actions. In more extreme circumstances, when a public figure violates the rules or beliefs of an entire country and is banned from entering the nation.

1. Beyonce – Malaysia

The pop star was forced to reschedule a concert in Malaysia after being banned from the country for alleged misconduct. The popular singer was banned due to what the government considers to be immoral dress and behavior that promotes, “Western sexy performances.”, according to the BBC.

Beyoncé seems to remain a popular figure in the area, but Malaysian fans will have to travel out of the country to see the singer perform live.

2. Justin Bieber – China

Justin Bieber was banned from performing in China due to his “bad conduct.” According to a statement from Beijing’s Municipal Bureau of Culture, “Justin Bieber is a gifted singer. But in order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers.”

However, in Argentina he was banned for allegedly assaulting a photographer.

3. Chris Brown – Australia

In 2009, the singer was convicted of felony assault for hitting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. The Australian Federal Government refused him entry in 2009, citing a zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence. Brown attempted to persuade them to reconsider their choice by volunteering to launch a domestic violence awareness campaign.

But ex-Australian minister Michaelia Cash rejected, saying, “People need to understand if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you, ‘You cannot come in because you are not of the character we expect in Australia.'”.

4. Miley Cyrus – China and the Dominican Republic

The photo of the “Wrecking Ball” singer got her barred from entering China. In 2009, Cyrus slanted her eyes in a stereotyped manner, causing ex-Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to make a statement saying, “Miss Cyrus has made it apparent she is no friend of China or anybody of East Asian origin.” We have no desire to further contaminate our children’s minds with her American illiteracy.” After Cyrus apologized and denied any racial intent, the restriction was removed.

However, Cyrus came under fire again in 2014 when Dominican Republic government officials refused to allow her to bring her tour to their nation. They took issue with her “acts against morality and conventions, which are criminal under Dominican law.”

5. Lady Gaga – Indonesia and China

Lady Gaga is unpopular in Muslim nations, like Indonesia, where she is viewed as a corrupting influence. In 2012, Indonesian law enforcement denied the singer a concert permit in Jakarta, citing obscenity and immorality in her music style.

Lady GaGa is one of several celebrities barred from entering China, but unlike most, she was barred twice. The pop singer was barred from performing in 2011 due to her flamboyant character and boundary-pushing dress, which the authorities deemed “vulgar.”

In 2016, GaGa was barred from meeting with the Dalai Lama, who has been barred from entering China since 1959. Following their meeting, the administration released a statement announcing the ban and instructing media outlets to stop airing her content.

6. Jay Z – China

The US rapper and husband of Beyoncé was banned from performing in China in 2006 because his music contains “too many profane lyrics”. The Ministry of Culture said in a statement that it had “decided to protect the city’s hip hop fans from nasty lyrics about pimps, guns and drugs”.

Jay-Z had been scheduled to perform in Shanghai, but the promoter said some of his songs apparently “contain too much vulgar language”.

7. Selena Gomez – Russia and China

The singer was denied a visa by Russian officials in September 2016, forcing her to cancel two gigs.

Russian authorities cited her stated plans to speak out against the country’s anti-LGBT policies during her shows as the grounds for her visa suspension. The government passed legislation prohibiting the marketing of “non-traditional sexual relationships to children” in June of that year.

Not long after, China refused Gomez a tour visa because of images she took with the Dalai Lama two years before.

8. Snoop Dogg – Norway

In 2012, Snoop Doggy Dogg was barred from visiting Norway for two years. The rapper was stopped on his way to Norway’s Hove Festival carrying eight grams of cannabis and cash in excess of the legal limit.

According to the BBC, Snoop Dogg was allowed to play at the event but was later fined and barred from returning to the nation for two years.

9. Elton John – Egypt

In 2010, Elton John was forced to cancel a private concert in Egypt when the country banned him due to his sexuality and his public comments on gay rights.
