A teacher was arrested on charges of rape after having sex with an underage student, police in Nigeria said.

Adamawa State Police said that they have arrested Alhassan Adamu, a teacher at the Tappare-Ganye Community Islamic Centre, after being accused of raping a student and infecting her with HIV.

Police warned students to stay away from teachers who prey on them.

Police fear that as much as 13 students may have been infected with HIV by having sex with Adamu, but so far, only one student came forward.

According to the police investigation, Adamu began having sex with students about 8 years ago. The teacher’s crimes came to light after one of his students tested positive for HIV and notified the police.
