How doctors used intestine to create vagina for woman born without genital organ

A group of surgeons from the North-West China’s Shaanxi Province have successfully carried out a surgical procedure on a certain woman born with no vagina.

The 23-year-old woman identified only as Zhang was said to have found out she had no vagina when she could not menstruate after attaining puberty.

DailyMail is reporting that Zhang went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a condition known as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, MRKH.

The MRKH is a congenital abnormality characterized by women who have no vagina, womb and cervix and is found in one in every 5,000 women in the world.doc 2

A renowned plastic surgeon and medical professor in China, Guo Shuzhong, who led the medical team, said if Zhang wishes to have babies, they will need to carry out a uterus transplant surgery.

Shuzhong became popularly known after he conducted the first face transplant operation in China in 2006 and successfully built an artificial ear for a man using his patient’s cartilage.

A B-scan ultra-sonography reportedly revealed that Zhang has no vagina or uterus, but she has functioning ovaries and in a very rare medical procedure, the surgeons reportedly took a section of Zhang’s small intestine and used it to create a vagina for her.doc 1

The doctors said the man-made vagina has no difference to a normal vagina in terms of its appearance and functionality after the patient recalled she had not been able to date any man because of her condition and how she had turned down many admirers who had asked her out.

The operation was assisted by a da Vinci robot, a technology used to carry out minimal invasive surgery.
