Indian boy born with upside-down head should be allowed to die

A 12-year-old boy, Mahendra Ahirwar, from Madhya Pradesh in central India, suffers from a rare condition that his head hangs at a 180-degree angle.

The parents of the young boy have admitted they would rather he died than continue to suffer as Mahendra’s neck is constantly bent and he is restricted to a sitting position, unable to stand or walk, because of his weak backbone.

Mahendra needs help when eating and going to the toilet as he can just about crawl is forced to sit in the corner of the room for a whole day.

His parents, Mukesh Ahirwar, 40 and Sumitra Ahirwar, 35, who work as labourers, said they have contacted more than 50 doctors across the country but none have been able to diagnose their son’s condition.

“I cannot see him suffer anymore. Watching his life is devastating,” his mother Sumitr Ahirwar said.

Mrs. Ahirwar said “I have to carry him like a baby everywhere but he is 12-years-old, how will I carry him when he grows even older? “

“If doctors cannot treat my son it is better that God takes him,” she added.

The local residents have disturbingly blamed Mahendra’s condition on Mukesh’s past sins and believe he is to blame for his son’s disability.

“They say I must have committed some terrible sins and this is why he is suffering. It’s awful,” said Mahendra’s father who is a construction worker with only earning around Rs200 a day.

With India’s premier hospital and All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi remaining incapable to determine a diagnosis for the child, Mr. and Mrs. Ahirwar made a devastating decision to stop taking Mahendra to the doctors.

However, Mr. Ahirwar is still hoping for a miracle. He added: “I still have so many hopes and dreams for him. I want to see him go to school and play with other kids,” he said.

“I want to see him living a normal life and I am hoping that my wish will be fulfilled one day,” Mr. Ahirwar added.
