The 293 women and girls who were reportedly rescued by Nigerian troops from the Boko Haram Sambisa forest stronghold are now being screened for signs of pregnancy and HIV, according to a military source.

Military authorities have taken the rescued to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State. A handful of the girls are also said to be nursing gunshot injuries sustained during the raid.

The military will also carry out an interrogation to unravel the identities of the women and girls as a last step to reuniting them with their families and handing them over to the Borno State Government.

Most of the freed are psychologically and traumatically scarred and can barely remember where they were kidnapped from, said another military source. The women and girls will also be rehabilitated by the Borno State Government once they’ve been handed over.

Boko Haram has abducted thousands of women and girls since it waged an insurgency against the Nigerian State in 2009. Most of the abducted are subjected to various forms of harrowing sexual slavery.
