Akinsanya Osibogun, president of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, has issued a warning over the exodus of medical professionals leaving the country.
He challenged President Muhammadu Buhari, governments, and medical stakeholders to create strategies and policies in order to reverse the trend and retain doctors in Nigeria.
Mr. Osibogun, a professor of public health, spoke during a press conference for the 16th Annual Scientific Conference and Fellows' Congress on Saturday in Lagos.
Approximately 8,000 professionals have been produced by this university for our country thus far, but many are departing.
Despite the fact that the university produces a big number of professionals for the country, the current situation in Nigeria is leading to a significant brain drain in the health system "said he.
The public health professor said that "brain drain is damaging not just the specialists but also the younger doctors at many hospitals."
He continued by saying that methods were used at the university to develop knowledgeable professionals for the nation's service.
"One of the ways the institution takes to ensure the caliber of professionals is to encourage continued medical education. According to Mr. Osibogun, the purpose of holding this scientific conference each year is to provide individuals the opportunity to exchange medical and scientific knowledge. At this conference, all of our fellows who have been involved in research will discuss their findings in order to chart a new direction for hospital patient care.
