The Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacist, University of Jos, Prof Noel Wannang, has raised concern over the increase in breast cancer cases and infant mortality rate in Nigeria.

He called on Pharmacists to come up with innovations to tackle the menace. Wannang stated this during the Pharmacy Week seminar held by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria Akwa Ibom state chapter on Thursday in Uyo, the state capital.

He disclosed that Nigeria is currently maintaining the first spot in breast cancer disease in the West Africa region and second after the neighbouring Niger Republic on the issue of infant mortality.

Addressing participants at the event with the theme: “Pharmacists Strengthening the Health Systems” Prof. Wannang lamented that health outcomes remain poor in Nigeria despite higher expenditure since 2001, stressing that better outcomes are seen in countries with equivalent and lower expenditures.

He also advocated for a strong health system with effective policies, oversight and accountability, with special attention to system design and appropriate regulation.
