Man buried with cutlass, knife and bullets to avenge death in Ghana

The family of 27-year-old Osei Tawiah in Krofrom in the Ashanti region made a 'statement' when his body was laid in state, Thursday.

Residents were in agreement with the mourning family to place a broom, a machete and a bullet in the coffin.

Also in the coffin was a bullet cartridge, eggs, a sponge, a pair of shoes, a cap, pepper and other items.

The family who said they didn't want the presence of the police at the event also invoked curses on the killers of Tawiah.

The late Osei Tawiah was allegedly brutalised to death by the police on May 26 at Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi.

The items, according to the relatives of the deceased are meant to aid Tawiah in the spirit world to avenge his death.

Nhyira FM's Kwasi Debrah reports that an aunt of the deceased told him she had had what the Akans call 'nsamankom' (a trance that enables the living to interact with the dead) during the one-week celebration.

The aunt said he instructed the family through her to put the items in the coffin to avenge his untimely death.

Another relative spoke of having a vision Wednesday instructing him to do same by the deceased.

The family was earlier refused the body after they had contested the autopsy report performed by Dr Osei Sampane, Head of the Pathology Department at KATH on June 1, 2016, which said he died of natural causes.

The report concluded that Tawiah died of a heart attack.

Following their rejection of the autopsy report, the hospital gave the family an option: to either go to a private pathologist to conduct an independent autopsy or present a letter to KATH indicating they had accepted the first autopsy report based on which the body would be released.

He was sent to Juansa where he was buried.
