16-year-old boy dies while performing money ritual rites in Abeokuta

A secondary school student, one Raimi Fatai, in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital reportedly died while performing money ritual rites on Tuesday, P.M News reports.

The deceased, 16, was said to have consumed an unknown liquid substance given to him by three other classmates during the said money ritual process which led to his untimely death.

One of the students whose father is a herbalist allegedly got the process for money making ritual from his father’s account and gathered his friends to try the ritual, which resulted in the death.

The incident occurred during the Valentine period and the unexpected result came days after, leading to the Fatai’s death on Tuesday.

After the consumption of the substance, Fatai was said to have fallen ill, while another student whose identity remains unknown, is said to be battling to survive at an undisclosed hospital in Abeokuta.

Policemen from Adatan Police Division in Abeokuta, following the death of the victim, have reportedly arrested some of the students for interrogation while the remains of the student has been deposited at the mortuary of the state hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

The State Police spokesman, ASP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.

Adejobi said the Command had launched an investigation into the incident and will soon conclude its findings.

Confirming the incident also, the Principal of the unnamed school said though the incident occurred outside the school premises, the authority had taken a drastic decision to ensure that they don’t influence other students.

The Principal, however, affirmed that the authorities of the school would continue to sensitize the students against engaging in all forms of social vices that could destroy their future.

She said the authority reported the incident to the parents and a decision was taken that the students involved be expelled from the school, lamenting that the incident was a reflection of the level of moral decadence in the society.

The unidentified Principal described the teenage student’s death as sad and unfortunate, noting that the state Ministry of Education had been informed and were already looking into the matter.
