Parents from the Chibok community of north-east Nigeria are being sent to neighbouring Cameroon to verify whether a would-be suicide bomber is one of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram nearly two years ago.

A young woman arrested in northern Cameroon on Friday told investigators she was one of the 270 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped from a school in Chibok on April 14, 2014.

She was one of two would-be bombers who were arrested wearing a belt packed with 12 kilograms of explosives.

Northern Cameroon Governor Midjiyawa Bakari said the girl's claim was being treated with caution.

"Such would-be attackers are often drugged and can say anything," he said.

Garba Shehu, a spokesman for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, said the Nigerian High Commissioner in Cameroon had been in contact with Cameroonian authorities who had shown a willingness to assist the investigation.

"We hope that the Chibok parents will be able to identify the girl and determine whether she is indeed one of their missing students," Mr Shehu said in a telephone interview in Abuja.

Mr Shehu said the Government was keen to ascertain the girl's identity so she can be brought back to Nigeria and possibly assist in investigations regarding the fate and whereabouts of the other missing Chibok girls.

The abduction sparked international outrage and the #bringbackourgirls social media campaign. While about 50 of the girls managed to escape, 219 remain missing.

One of the two parents selected to embark on the trip to Cameroon is Yana Galang, whose 16-year-old daughter Rifkatu is among the missing.

"If it is true, we are very happy about it. If we see her with our eyes, we will know where our girls are," Ms Galang said.
