Nigerian man bags life imprisonment in Tanzania

A Moshi High Court sitting in Tanzania on Monday sentenced a Nigerian man, Joachim Ike, to life imprisonment for drug trafficking.

Ike was arrested at the Kilimajaro International Airport on May 11, 2013.

He was reportedly found in possession of 7kgs of heroin with a street value of over Sh300 million, during a routine check.

Delivering his sentence, the presiding Judge, Benedict Mingwa, ruled that the evidence by the prosecution against Ike was beyond reasonable doubt.

He said, “The evidence produced by the prosecution, along with the testimony provided during this case clearly shows that the accused person committed the offence.”

Mingwa insisted that the 36-year-old Nigerian convict must serve in the East Africa country since that was where he was arrested and charged, despite pleas by his defence lawyer, Philip Njau, for the judge to allow Ike serve his jail term in Nigeria, Daily News reports
