This creepy fish was spotted in sand on a popular beach

One woman strolling along a Virginia Beach in the US got rather a fright when she came across this face staring at her.

The large white fish, known as stargazer, buried deep into the sand with just its glaring eyes and scary gnashers poking out.

Pictures of the fish were posted to Facebook by the East Coast Surfing Championships.

The surf club noted that the odd looking fish are usually found in deep waters and they bury themselves in the sand to hide from prey.

Okeanus Explorer spots ghost fish for the first time

Okeanus Explorer spots ghost fish for the first time Researchers are baffled after discovering for the first time a ghostly fish that measures just 10 centimetres. It is for the first time that researchers have spotted this fish alive, more than two kilometres below the ocean’s surface. The pale slug-like fish was caught on camera by the Okeanus Explorer during an expedition of the Northern Mariana Islands, in the Pacific Ocean. The ghostly-looking creature is believed to belong to the Aphyonidae family.“This is just remarkable ... I am sure that this is an Aphyonid and I am sure that this is the first time a fish of this family has ever been seen alive,” he added.

They noted: "Stargazers bury themselves in the sand in order to ambush prey. Their secondary gland creates an electric which makes them a serious predator.

"They do not pose any real threat to humans, but they sure look menacing."

Ashley Raper Starr was the one who found the fish, and she told Associated Press: "We were all curious as to what that could be making bubbles in the sand. We were making guesses as we waited for the water to run back over it and reveal the critter's face."

She added: "I have never seen one on the beach and I grew up here in the VB area and have spent much time on the beach".

According to Chesapeake Bay, the fish are generally found in deep, open waters and can grow to 22 inches in length.
