‘Mandela’, ‘Obama’, ‘Joe’. So the man who named his dog ‘Buhari’ boasts of other high profile names for his other dogs too

Joachim Chinakwe, the man arrested for naming his dog after President Buhari has said he has other dogs which he named after high profile world leaders. He even mentioned one dog, now dead, which he said he named after the late anti-apartheid hero and former South African president, Nelson Mandela. Mr Chinakwe added for good measure, ‘I don’t just give any name to my dog, I give reputable names to my dogs.’

Chinakwe, 40, who appeared before a Magistrate Court sitting in Ota Division of the state, last Monday, had spent three-days in detention at the Ibara Prisons, Abeokuta.

Speaking with journalists after he had perfected his release condition, Iroko, said he had no regret naming his dog “Buhari”.

The father of two was charged before the court for an action likely to cause breach of public peace.

He said his action was misconstrued by some people, saying he has other dogs which he named after his role models.

“I have no regret for my action; it only happened that some people misconstrued my action.

“I am so happy for having splendid life again; it is a joy to me.

“I have three dogs, one bears Obama, one bears Joe, my full name and the third is Buhari.

“I named these dogs after my role models, and the late dog I had bore Nelson Mandela, It is the love I have for Buhari, who is my role model.

“Buhari is not only the president of the North, he is the president of Nigeria, I see no reason why northerners should be angry, and Nigeria is one.

“I see no reason why they will be intimidating me. Why? What is the meaning of noun?

“It is my right to name my dog any name that is just. Thank God, I have regained my freedom. The most painful is the way they treated my dog. It is painful they killed my dog while I was in detention,” he said.
