N23billion bribe: INEC suspends 202 staff

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended 202 of its staff, who were indicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for allegedly collecting a N23billion bribe ahead of the 2015 general elections.

INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of the South West, Solomon Soyebi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja.

Soyebi explained that the commission took the decision to suspend the affected electoral officers, because the Directorate of Public Prosecution was investigating them for prosecution.

Punch reports that the affected officals have been receiving half of their salaries indefinitely, pending their prosecution by the security agencies.

INEC had earlier announced the suspension of 23 electoral officers who were indicted by the Joint Police/DSS report on the Rivers rerun election on March 9, 2017.
