The next Police roadblock or checkpoint you see is an illegality, according to the spanking new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase.

Arase also warned that under his watch, the police high command wouldn’t tolerate corruption within its ranks and offending officers will pay dearly.

“All roadblocks are illegal”, Arase said at a function with police officers in the nation’s capital.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) ranks as one of the most corrupt in the world and its reputation has been blighted by decades of bribe taking at checkpoints and roadblocks.

Arase is however not the first police boss to promise a dismantling of illegal roadblocks only to watch them spring up across the country the next day.
