It came to our attention through communique No NHC/OTT/ADM.422.X, that Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa plans to charge additional fees for passport renewal, passport replacement, and replacement from Wednesday, February 10, 2021.

On behalf of Nigerians living in Canada, we request, a delay in implementing the new surcharge for the services listed above. We also seek an urgent meeting between the High Commission and various community organizations and stakeholders.

This issue is of great importance, and we require an immediate response.

For some years, the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa has been a beacon of pride to Nigerians in Canada for their exceptional service to our community and smooth, efficient same-day services by the passport office.

We have issues with the proposed SURCHARGE. The community also wishes to suggest that the NHC should hold off on implementing the new fees until after the meeting with the community.

At a time when for over a year, many families have been suffering hardship due to COVID-19 pandemic, which may be compounded by job losses and other family problems.

We also believe that the new fee structure will be particularly hard on Nigerian students in Canada, many of who usually require valid passports to maintain their legal visa status in Canada, and are also limited to receiving financial and other types of assistance in order to survive.

WE NEED YOUR SIGNATURE TO GIVE US THE MANDATE TO LOBBY ON YOUR BEHALF AGAINST THIS UNNECESSARY ADDITION CHARGES.
