4 Things We Now know About the Chibok Girls

379 days ago, schoolgirls were kidnapped from Government secondary school Chibok in Borno state. While the girls have not been found, news reports have helped shed light into their plights.

Here are 4 things we now know about the Chibok girls:

  • They are not in Sambisa Forest

In the past week, Nigerian troops have raided the Sambisa forest and rescued at leaset 1000 persons but the Chibok girls haven't been found. While the army has refused to comment on the absence of Chibok girls in Sambisa, it is only logical to conclude that they're no longer there.

  • The Parent Now Suspect Teachers

The parents of the Chibok girls believe that the school Vice principal was somehow involved in the kidnap. In an interview granted to Sahara Reporters, one of the parents questioned instructions and threats made by the vice principal to the girls and their parents.

See excerpt from Sahara Reporter: A mother of one of the abducted girls, Mariam Abubakar, stated that Vice Principal Yerima Banjiri had told the school girls that any one of them who failed to sleep in the school the night of the abduction would be expelled as a student of Government Girls Secondary School Chibok.

  • They Have Most Certainly Been Sold Off Or are wives

Based on reports gotten from survivors the missing Chibok girls have been sold into slavery or married off. Speaking to Reuters, Aisha Abbas, a 45-year old mother of two said, ''They said the Chibok girls were married off this year. Some sold to slavery, then others (militants) each married two or four of the girls''

  • They could very well be all pregnant or have children

Most of the girls rescued from boko haram were reportedly pregnant. We don't see how things will be different for the Chibok girls except maybe they were kidnapped by another group pretending to be boko haram.
