According to an expert researcher, Nigeria's Boko Haram emerged from social injustices and has nothing to do with Islam, StarAfrica says.
Dr. Bakary Sambe, a Researcher at the Dakar-based Religions Study Centre.Sambe maintained that the terrorist group rose from frustrations and social injustices that have driven young people to revolt against the Central government in Nigeria.”
Speaking during the launch ceremony of his book (Boko Haram: From Nigeria’s problem to regional threat), he said Boko Haram's actions and extortions even harm the image of Islam, a religion of peace and tolerance.
Sambe, also the coordinator of the Observatory of Radicalisms and Conflicts in Africa (ORCRA), said the sect only aims to form an Islamic State in Nigeria and wherever possible, but also the full implementation of the Sharia law.
Considering that the Islamic world, in many situations, has more adopted attitudes of rejection and resistance, Sambe stressed that self-criticism can validly be an alternative for "Islam not to be assimilated anymore with violence and killings perpetuated by Boko Haram and other jihadist groups."
Speaking of the expected impact of his book in the crusade against Boko Haram, the Senegalese researcher hopes his book will raise awareness among leaders that “terrorism is an evil that is not distant.
"Terrorism has now become a truly African matter and no drones or weapons will protect us from this evil but rather prevention," he advised.
And to do so, according to Mr. Sambe, "the best prevention is investing in the education systems to avoid the marginalization and impoverishment as well as good governance."
