President Jonathan Just Approved 18 Community Radio Licenses

 

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the establishment of community radio stations in the country.

The Director General of National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Emeka Mba disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja.

“Mr. President just approved community radio stations, and that is great news for lovers of community radio in the country, finally community radio has been approved in Nigeria”, Mr. Mba said.

Mr. Mba said the regulatory body was working out modalities with those licensed to ensure that they carry out their mandate effectively in disseminating information at the grass roots.

“We will be meeting with Community Radio Coalition and the representatives of the licensed stations so that we can work with them and reach a deep understanding on what their roles and responsibilities will be in the new era.

Community radio station is vital in educating and enlightening people at the grassroots which will add value to broadcasting in Nigeria,” he said

Eighteen licenses were approved by President Goodluck Jonathan to operate the community radio stations across the country on low power Frequency Modulation (FM) within the communities.

They spread across the geopolitical zones of the country.

Mr. Mba urged the associations and communities that have been licensed to operate within the confines of the country’s broadcast code to add value to broadcasting.
