Police nab five drug barons in Ekiti

 
Ekiti State Police Command has arrested some suspected drug barons operating in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mr Sunday Abutu, said the arrested suspects, who are youths, were also members of various cult groups in the state.

Abutu identified the suspects as Adewumi Gboyega, Temitope Oyeyemi, Kazeem Ayomide, Adewumi Praise and Olayinka Emmanuel.

He said the suspects were arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) attached to the command, following a credible information received from members of the public following a tip-off.

Abutu said upon the receipt of the information, men of the RRS went after the suspects before they were arrested at a popular hotel in Ikere-Ekiti, Ikere local government area of the state.

“Upon the receipt of the information, the operatives of the RRS swung into action and traced them to the hotel where they were lodging.

The Police spokesperson said when a search operation was conducted in the room where they were lodging, the police recovered three packs of suspected Arizona Hemp, fifty wraps of suspected cocaine, fifteen packs of loud hemp, twenty wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

Other items recovered from the suspects were 10 gas lighters, one sharp knife and a cash sum of seventy six thousand, nine hundred naira only.

Abutu added that during investigations and interrogations, the arrested suspects confessed to be members of various cult groups and illicit drug dealers.

He disclosed that the suspects, who are currently detained at the office of the RRS located along Iyin-Ekiti road, Ado-Ekiti will be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed on the matter.

Speaking on the arrest of the suspects, the State Commissioner of Police Mr Tunde Mobayo, commended members of the public over what he called their cooperation and support in providing timely and useful information to the Police, which he said has led to the arrest of the suspects and other criminal elements operating within the State.

He reiterated the readiness of the Command, under his watch not to relent in its efforts to cripple the activities of criminals in the State.
