More than 80 individuals were fatally shot by Nigerian government troops after they rounded up villagers, many of whom were thought to be innocent youngsters, according to reports and residents of the state on Saturday.

On Sunday, social media was flooded with images and videos of the massacre’s aftermath in the eastern Ogbaru community, in the Charles Soludo and Peter Obi Anambra State.

There was no way for the social media accounts to be fact checked. The bodies of numerous victims could be seen on the ground in the photos.

According to a villager who claimed to have observed the killing, it happened in the communities of Ossomala, Umunankwo, and Obeagwa on Tuesday evening, June 28, and early on Wednesday morning, June 29.

According to reports, military soldiers began to deploy in the area on Tuesday evening, claiming to be searching for unknown gunmen who had lately besieged the neighborhood.

According to SaharaReporters, the soldiers later turned their weapons on the defenseless and unarmed natives and others, abandoning the forests that the locals claimed were the locations of the unknown gunmen’s hideouts, which were situated inside the large river/swamp forest of Obene-Ochuche/Umuzu/Okija that is divided by the Ulasi River.

The New York Citizen outlet reported that more than 20 vehicles carrying soldiers, weapons, and ammunition were mobilized from the Onitsha 302 Artillery Regiment and the Ogbaru Naval Base.

Military personnel were accused of firing at close range on helpless people, mostly young males, killing many of them. They also hurt and arrested other people, who were later interrogated and labeled “ESN/IPOB hoodlums.”

One of the many pictures showed dead bodies with gunshot wounds to the forehead, heart, stomach, back, and manhood lying on the ground and other places in the neighborhood.

Another video reveals that in addition to the corpses, relatives could also be seen wailing. Wheelbarrows with their husbands’ bodies on them were also observed being carried by women.

Another widely circulated video depicts soldiers putting pump action rifles on top of some of the deceased civilians in an apparent attempt to legitimize the killing or their tagging as “IPOB/ESN” terrorists.

Another widely shared footage shows numerous soldiers conducting a street-to-street raid.
