… Rape, an Extraordinary Psychological Stressor- Expert

Speaking on the mental health of rape victims, the Secretary-General of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, Dr. Abayomi Olajide, noted that rape could result in stress-related disorders and several psychiatric disorders.

Olajide added that other challenges but stigma could be overcome by the victims when given proper medical attention.

He said, “rape is an extraordinary psychological stressor that is sufficient to cause stress-related disorders including, acute stress reaction, acute stress disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress disorder. It can also function as a non-specific precipitant to several functional psychiatric disorders, including but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders.

“The stigma associated with rape comes in several forms, Public stigma, structural stigma, and probably more importantly self-stigma. While it may be impossible for the victim to make significant changes in any other aspects of stigma, self-stigma is mostly under the control of the victim.

“The victim can be helped to see himself/herself as not being less of a person after the incident than previously. The negative stereotypical beliefs associated with rape can be directly addressed, which will encourage positive attitudes towards self and in turn, eliminate the tendency towards social exclusion.”

Speaking on the factors responsible for rape, the expert said, “there are anecdotal reports that suggest that some cases of rape also involve incest (i.e. Father-child, Mother-child, sibling-sibling, etc.).

“Some reports have suggested that factors such as drug abuse, pornography, dysfunctional family settings, lack of supervision of teenage children, lack of privacy are associated with such incestuous relationships/rape.”

… Defilement Of Minors Is Worrisome- PPRO

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi expressed worries over the incessant rape of minors across the state.

Oyeyemi added that the rate at which minors are being abused is alarming and worrisome.

He said, “It is worrisome. The rate at which it is happening in quick succession is very disturbing.

“How can fathers have carnal knowledge of their daughters? But there is nothing we can do, as we can’t be following everybody to their houses.

The Police boss urged mothers to be wary of the level of intimacy between their husbands and their daughters, adding that they should raise alarm if need be.

“We have been sensitizing the public and even mothers to be very careful and watchful of their daughters.

“If the intimacy level between the father and the daughters is becoming too much, mothers should raise the alarm.

“Parents should be watchful of their girl child, especially with their outings and who they are left with.”

..Victims Responsible For Delay In Justice

Oyeyemi attributed the culture of silence and family bias as factors responsible for the delay in justice for survivors of rape.

He noted that victims would rather keep quiet and not stand as witnesses during court proceedings because of stigmatization, adding some accept bribes from the perpetrators.

“Delay in justice is always caused by the victims because getting them to testify in court is a problem.

“In some cases, the family of the victim will compromise and collect money from the suspect and frustrate the investigative efforts of the police.” He said

The Executive Director, Spring Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Damola Lapite, said that victims among other factors contribute to delays in justice.

Lapite emphasized that lack of finance, societal norms that stigmatize victims, and lack of cooperation and support from government and stakeholders in the society are factors responsible for delay in justice.

He said, “you know where money is not available to do what is required or do it holistically, you have kickstarted the delay.

“The problem is when you tell a poor person that he/she has to pay about 100k for the whole process of getting the matter to court while the perpetrator is dangling 150k before them, what do you think they’ll take?

“The society demonizes survivors causing stigmatization in turn making survivors more traumatized and in several situations forced to abandon the pursuit of justice.

“Lack of cooperation and support from government and stakeholders in the society stemming from above.”
