100 grammes of Indian Hemp - Man bags 10-year jail term for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos presided over by Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia on Thursday sentenced a 30-year-old man, Adedeji Adeleye, to 10 years imprisonment for trafficking 100 grammes of Indian hemp.

The convict, who resides at Ilori Bello Street in Ikeja area of the State, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Following the guilty plea by Adeleye, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia sentenced him to 10 years jail term without an option of fine, adding that the judgement was in accordance with the provisions of Section 281 of the Criminal Procedure Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.Justice Ajumogobia further stated that the sentence would take effect from the day of arrest.

Adeleye was sentenced following the review of the facts of the case that was brought before the court by the NDLEA prosecutor, Mr Orji Kalu.

According to Kalu, the convict was arrested following a petition sent to the NDLEA by landlords around the convict’s residents on his dubious activities.

Kalu said operatives of the agency arrested the convict on November 26, 2014 at his residence.

The prosecutor told the court that Adeleye unlawfully dealt in 100 grammes of Indian hemp when he was nabbed, adding that the convict during an interrogation confessed to the crime.

He said a forensic laboratory test carried out on the substance found on the convict proved to be Indian hemp.

Following the presentation of facts by the ant-narcotics agency, the convict pleaded with the court for leniency as he would never indulge in such an illicit act again.

Kalu said the offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.
