Mother with three sets of twins gets help

LAGOS State governor Akinwunmi Ambode has offered to come to the assistance of Ruth Uche the mother of three sets of twins who has been left stranded after her husband fled after hearing she was pregnant with the third set.

Factory worker Emeka Benjamin Uche took off after his wife delivered their third set of twins amid fears that the responsibility of looking after them will be too big a burden to carry.   Apparently, Mr Uche, 39, fled from their family home as far back as February when he learnt that his expectant wife was carrying a set of twins.

Exasperated at the frustrating situation, Ruth visited the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa yesterday with her six children, pleading for help. Moved by her plight, Governor Ambode has stepped in, asking his staff to ensure that Mrs Uche and her children are looked after at the expense of the state.

Upon hearing about her plight, Governor Ambode told his deputy, Dr Oluranti Adebule, that the rehabilitation and provision of welfare for the woman and her children should be carried out with immediate effect. According to the governor, the wellbeing of the people of the state, irrespective of their ethnic, religious or political affiliation, remained paramount to his administration.

Governor Ambode said: “It is not proper for anyone to abandon his family, especially young children that they willingly brought to life. It is only when such children are properly taken care of that they can achieve their full potentials in life and become responsible citizens.”

He added that his government would continue to provide good leadership that would guarantee adequate protection of lives and property of all residents. Mrs Uche had cried out that her meagre earnings as a teacher in a private school in Lagos can no longer meet the needs of her children.
