Popular academic and public affairs analyst, Prof. Pius Adesanmi, has accused his fellow Okun man, Senator Smart Adeyemi, of corruption. Adesanmi levied the accusation yesterday as he rounded up his visit to Nigeria and prepared to depart for his base in Canada, where he is a university teacher.
Writing on his Facebook wall, Adesanmi expressed surprise that Adeyemi, a one-time national President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has become stupendously rich after spending just eight years as a Senator.
Passing the unflattering judgment after being shown “a magnificent hotel” and several others in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, reportedly owned by Senator Adeyemi, an astounded Prof. Adesanmi wrote: “Baba Adesanmi did not raise me to appreciate and thank God for unaccountable wealth.”
He described Adeyemi as “a poorly-paid journalist his entire life before he went to the Senate,” adding: “Two terms in the Senate and an aborted third term gambit do not account for the stupendous wealth on display around Ilorin by the said Senator.”
According to Adesanmi, “the fact that Senator Smart Adeyemi is building all those hotels in broad daylight in Ilorin, from the proceeds of corruption and to the admiration of ordinary Nigerians, is an indication of doom for that godforsaken corruption-friendly country.”
He promised that “Senator Smart Adeyemi and his hotels will hear from me in my next string of op-eds in the weeks to come,” adding:
“Pox on Smart Adeyemi for stealing!
“Pox on Nigerians for allowing it!”
