ICPC report: Okiro is angry with the Punch Newspaper for distortion

Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Mike Okiro has threatened legal action against Punch Newspapers if it failed to retract the story on ICPC investigation on the commission.

The paper had reported that the ICPC indicted Okiro and directed him to remit N133 million domiciled within FCMB to the Federal Treasury through the ICPC recovery account.

Speaking through Head, Press and Public Relations of PSC, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the former Inspector General of Police told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja that the report by the paper was misleading.

“I have gone through some of the papers; some were so misdirected and misleading; we could not locate where they are getting their stories, especially the Punch Newspaper.

“The report of the Punch Newspaper is misleading and actionable; we have requested that they should retract the story, if not we will take them to court.

“The ICPC report is very clear and explicit and it says there is no criminal aspect in the allegations leveled against the person of the chairman.”

Ani said the report cleared Okiro and requested the commission to retire the remaining money after the training into the federation account.

“I think it should be clear that the chairman has been given a clean bill of health by the ICPC in its report,” he said.

Ani added that there was nowhere in the report that the chairman was asked to refund money to the government.

“The chairman is not a signatory to the account of the commission.

“The account of the commission is being managed by the administrative structure of the commission.”

NAN reports that in its report, the ICPC cleared Okiro of any criminal infraction in the utilisation of part of the N350 million for training of personnel for monitoring the 2015 elections.

Mr. Aaron Kaase, a staff of PSC had petitioned the ICPC that Okiro swindled the commission PSC of more than N275 million from the N350 million meant for training of its staff to monitor the conduct of the 2015 elections. (NAN)
