Muhammadu Buhari’s UN speech vowing to fight corruption: Nigerians clash this speech on social media

Nigerians divide their opinions about Muhammadu Buhari’s UN speech calling to fight corruption. While some people think Buahri is on right track, others tend to blame Nigerian president for lack of activity in the war against corruption. Read two most interesting and well-reasoned opinions by Naij.com readers.

Well done Mr President for the articulated presentation. The source of all evils facing our country, Nigeria is CORRUPTION. To mention a few, the following are the corrupt practices that make most Nigerians unable to receive medical care, pay children school fees, eat three times a day, potable drinking water, insecurities and many other sufferings:
1) Reckless looting of Nigeria’s wealth
2) Stashing the stolen wealth in Foreign Bank Accounts
3) Opportunities to go to best schools within and outside Nigeria is limited to the children of most of those who misuse their positions
4)Job opportunities in both public and private sector are very easy for looters’ children.
5)Building beautiful and too expensive houses(here and in foreign countries) for their families, which their legitimate earnings can’t afford.
6)Many Nigerians have no single room as a result of which the uncompleted buildings (possibly belonging to the looters) are their places of aboard. Some sleep under the bridge, by the road side etc. under the sun, rain and cold condition while those who play with public wealth are having well-furnished and unoccupied houses.
7)When they are lightly sick they go abroad for treatment; while an average Nigerian with an extremely serious ailment is ignored to die because of poor medical facilities.

All these are functions of corruption, which Nigeria’s President – Muhammad Buhari is fully poised to eradicate.
Therefore, if we Nigerians (from whatever religion, section, tribe, political party, background etc. we belong or come from), are serious and want get out of these and many other predicaments should support Mr President in the fight against corruption.

My comments may offend some looters and may sound well and acceptable with others (looters); while those Nigerians who find themselves in all the hardships (caused by corrupt Nigerians) enumerated earlier will agree with me.
CORRUPTION prevents you from getting what is LAWFUL to you and gives the CORRUPT what is UNLAWFUL to him/her. So let us say “no” to corruption and pray for the corrupt persons to be guided by Allah and stop the sharp practice; and if they can’t stop, may Allah make them suffer equal hardships they cause to innocent people and all other creatures.” Aminu Umar

However, not everybody shares this point of view; some people harshly criticised Buhari after he delivered his UN speech.

“When Nigerians will grow up? This people don’t want development. Buhari, your appointments so far shows you want people who will cover-up your loot.

Buhari shouldn’t be selective in anti-corruption war if he want to fight corruption, even if you probe the whole world without probing Obasanjo none will take you serious.

Who’s fooling who, Buhari, you claim you are fighting corruption but most corrupt people in the world are your best friends; imagine, Buhari hangs out with Obasanjo who is the most corrupt person in the world.

We need leader who can unite Nigerians – not Buhari type who is dividing the country with his northern agenda and their Borno mentality to rule.

South Africans always protect their citizens interests home and abroad. South Africa succeeded because they invest in their people. For this hatred and division between Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba I see no hope for future generation of this country called Nigeria. Only the vision of fairness and openness will save this country called Nigeria.

Some regions in Nigeria still face structural barriers to success and equality because of bad government. We want Nigeria president who will see Igbo man as Nigerian not as Igbo, we want president who will see Hausa man as Nigerian not as Hausa man, we want president who will see Yoruba man as Nigerian not as Yoruba man, we want president who will see Benin man as Nigerian not as Benin man.” Emeka Nnamani.

However, most of Nigerians think that PMB’s UN speech is “well-scripted, well-articulated; a speech from a world class leader at 70th UN General Assembly,” as told Isah Salee.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, September 28, addressed the international community at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.

In his speech Buhari reiterated his government’s commitment to tackling the problems “inherited” from the previous administration and referred to corruption as one of the major challenges of the 21st century.
