Pandemonium broke out on Daodu Street, Igbogbo in Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Wednesday when a 42-year-old man, Babatunde Akeem, killed himself by jumping into a well.
Akeem, prior to his death was alleged to have made several attempts to commit suicide but was always rescued by relatives and neighbours.
He however got his death wish on Wednesday after he jumped into the 120 feet deep well.
Following the incident, residents were said to have called officials of the Lagos State Fire Service who arrived the scene around 11am.
Punch reports that an official of the State fire service while reacting to the incident said, “The Ikorodu Fire Station was there after we received the distress call around 11am. But as soon as we got there, we learnt that he had been recovered dead and his remains taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital.
“We gathered that he had made attempts to kill himself in the past.
“He jumped into the well this morning and he was brought out dead.”
The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, who confirmed the incident disclosed that the agency would soon summon a meeting of stakeholders in the state so as to look into the increased rate of drowning in wells while finding a permanent solution.
