A father was arrested on charges of rape after allegedly raping and impregnating his 10-year-old stepdaughter, police in Paraguay said.

Police said that they arrested 42-year-old Gilberto Benitez Zarate, after being on the run for 15 days.

The girl was admitted to a hospital after she complained of abdominal pain. That is when doctors discovered that she was 20 weeks pregnant.

Zarate denied the allegations, saying that he never got anyone pregnant. The girl’s mother was also arrested by police after being accused of failing to protect her daughter.

Prison officials said that the father was placed in isolation in order to prevent other prisoners from attacking the suspect. The girl’s life is in danger as she weighs only 75 pounds and is 5 months pregnant.

It is illegal to perform abortions in the country.
