French no longer Burkina Faso’s official language

APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The chance for a diplomatic de-escalation between Ouagadougou and Paris will not come anytime soon.

French will no longer be the official language of Burkina Faso, in accordance with a draft law according to justice minister, Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday.

However, the European language of business for the administration which is also taught in schools will remain the working language.

“In this draft text, the national languages are institutionalised as official languages and French remains a working language,” said the minister.

Last August, the authorities in Ouagadougou renounced the double taxation agreements with France. The new status quo came into force in October 2023.

Previously, they had terminated the military agreements and demanded, and obtained, the withdrawal of the French embassy and troops.
