President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said he will fulfil the promise he made to the 1985 set of the Golden Eaglets.
The team had in 1985 become the first to win the Under-17 World Cup.
The position of Buhari was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said he was disappointed by state governments who failed to carry out a directive he handed over to them during his military leadership.
He said his administration will fulfill the promises made 30 years ago during a reception held at Dodan Barracks with the players, in celebration of their outstanding victory.
He said: “It is a pity that those promises were never fulfilled.
“It is unfortunate that our players, who did us proud on the world stage, went unrewarded for their efforts, despite a presidential directive to the state administrators that they be honored in their home states.”
