Senate President Bukola Saraki won’t be resigning after his name prominently featured in the Panama Papers.
The Panama leaks from the law firm of Mossak Fonseca reveals how celebrities, government officials, drug lords, criminals and Ponzi schemers evaded taxes by opening offshore companies in the Island of Panama.
There have been growing calls for Nigeria’s senate president to resign since the leaks. Saraki is also standing trial at the code of conduct tribunal for false declaration of assets. The Transition Monitoring Group lent its voice to the resignation hoopla, Friday.
But Saraki has stated for the umpteenth time he’s going nowhere.
Premium Times quotes the Special Adviser on Media to the senate president, Yusuph Olaniyonu, as saying Saraki is not contemplating resignation. He added that those calling for his resignation are being sponsored by politicians who never wanted him as senate president from the first day.
“There’s a case in the Tribunal and a resultant appeal at the Court of Appeal,” the senate president said through his spokesperson.
“The underlining philosophy of our legal system is that an accused person is presumed innocent until found guilty.
“Those who are contemplating calls for resignation want to circumvent the judicial system. They are obviously being sponsored by some politicians.
“The Senate President is not contemplating any resignation. He will surely have his day in court.”
