ANC’s MP, Zukisa Faku has been sentenced to three years house arrest for fraud and theft by the East London Magistrate Court. You’ll recall that Faku was convicted of nine counts of fraud and theft in March. Among other things, she misused municipal credit card in 2009 and 2010 when she was mayor of Buffalo City. As revealed, she did that to purchase luxury goods of about R15,000 during domestic and overseas travel. Read Also: Johannesburg’s Mayor Says ANC Wasted R190m On Travels Alone Reacting to her sentence, the Democratic Alliance (DA) party demanded that she should be recalled as a Member of Parliament saying she’s no longer fit to serve as an MP. “Zukisa Faku is no longer fit to serve as an MP following her sentencing to three years house arrest for fraud and theft…(She) acted with impunity as Mayor of Buffalo City and must now bear the consequence. “…House arrest will also make it impossible for (her) to do her job, especially in light of the new attendance policy for Members,” DA stated. With that, DA’s Chief Whip John Steenhuisen disclosed that he’ll refer the matter to the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interest if the ANC fails to recall her as a Member of Parliament. “I commend the judiciary for taking Ms. Faku to task and imposing an appropriate sentence. I trust the rest of the ANC Caucus will take note that, even though the majority party takes a lenient view on impropriety, an independent judiciary still exists in South Africa and the rule of law applies,” Steenhuisen added. See Also: Bemawu Calls For Motsoeneng’s account To Be Frozen Meanwhile, the opposition party said it will seek legal advice over the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC’s Group Executive of Corporate. “The speed and apparent secrecy with which the ‘process’ was carried out raises questions about the credibility of the appointment…the DA will be consulting with its lawyers and will brief the media on further steps to be taken in due course,” stated the party.
