RIVERS State governor Rotimi Amaechi has heightened the political tension across the country in the run-up to Saturday's elections by claiming that President Goodluck Jonathan has approved his assassination.
Dropping the bombshell in Lagos yesterday, Governor Amaechi said he had to hurriedly leave Port Harcourt because security agents had been sent to execute him in the date of the presidential election. According to Governor Amaechi, he was originally due to be killed on February 14 when presidential elections were scheduled to be held but this has now been moved to March 28.
Governor Amaechi said that, the plan to kill him on March 28 was hatched by the director-general of the State Security Service, who has asked for military cover whenever they invade Ubima in Rivers State to assassinate the governor on the day of the presidential elections. He added that 30 soldiers led by a major of Idoma extraction in Benue State have been assigned to carry out the assassination.
According to the governor, he was not bothered until he received the latest information from someone said to have been part of the meeting where the plan was hatched. He further disclosed that the chief of army staff, Lt General Kenneth Minima, who hails from Opobo in Rivers State, has flooded the community with solders with a plan to deliver the place to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Amaechi said: “Even yesterday, the military had reached in my village. If the president wants me dead, I should let the public know before I am shot dead by the president and his people.
“Citizens are being killed every day. Even those indicted by the police over Okrika killing are still walking the streets free.”
Furthermore, Governor Amaechi said he was asked to take caution from today or fly out of the country but he decided to reject the advice, saying the task of effecting change was a task to be done. He accused President Jonathan and the PDP of breaching the Abuja Peace Accord and of inciting violence in the country.
Governor Amaechi also accused the president’s wife, Patience Jonathan of taking over control of the police in Rivers State. He added that the state the commissioner of police attempted to arrest a member of the state house of assembly earlier this week to ensure that All Progressives Congress members do not come out on election day.
