JUNE 12TH: GOVERNMENT AWARDS GANI FAWEHINMI WITH THE HIGHEST HONOUR IN NIGERIA, GCON

While many Nigerians are grappling with the new public holiday declared for the celebration of June 12 as the new National Democracy Day and the concomitant recognition of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale “Olanbiwoninu” Abiola as a former President of Nigeria, many has missed the declaration of posthumous award to late human right activist and legal luminary, Chief Ganiyu Oyeshola Fawehinmi, SAN the second highest honour of Nigeria, typically given to Vice presidents and chief judges of the federation, GCON.See the last statement of the fourth paragraph of the President’s letter..

Accordingly, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12th will be celebrated as Democracy Day. Therefor, Government has decided to award posthumously the highest honour of the land, GCFR, to late Chief MKO Abiola, The presumed winner of the June 12th 1993 cancelled elections.

His running mate as Vice President, Ambassador Bab Gana Kingibe, is also to be invested with a GCON. Furthermore, the tireless fighter for human rights and the actualization of the June 12th elections and indeed for demo0crcy in general, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi is to be awarded posthumously a GCON.
