Earlier in the weeek, it was reported that former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, held a secret meeting with president-elect General Muhammadu Buhari, and political pundits are beginning to speculate that the subject of the meeting was tomorrow's governorship elections.
We read that Obasanjo held another secret meeting with the freshly-defected governor of Ebonyi state, Martin Elechi. The two-hour meeting, we read, focused on Saturday's governorship elections and the state House of Assembly elections.
While source denies the meeting ever held - “I heard Obasanjo was in Ebonyi State to visit his in-laws, but I am not aware that there was a meeting between him and the governor in the Government House” - the PUNCH newspaper says that a former commissioner in the state said that Obasanjo specifically requested that his meeting with the governor not be made public.
In Obasanjo's agenda is the prevention of Mr. Dave Umahi, PDP governorship candidate and current Deputy governor, from emerging winner on Saturday.
The former commissioner said: “Obasanjo is not pleased with the kind of treatment being meted out to his contemporary and friend, Elechi, by the PDP. He is not pleased that Elechi’s candidate and a former Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, was denied the Ebonyi PDP governorship ticket.
“He is also not pleased with the crisis that has engulfed the state in general since after the ill-fated Ebonyi PDP primaries and has come to ensure that Elechi’s wish prevails.”
