The chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Environment, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has praised the European Union (EU) for its role in Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly with regards to the collaboration in technical support in 2015 general elections.

Saraki noted that the successes recorded in the general elections could be traced to the assistance provided by EU and other friends of the country.

The former governor of the state spoke when the head of European Union delegation to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Michel Arrion, paid him a courtesy visit in his Ilorin country home..

He said that Nigeria was grateful for the roles played by the EU in the nation’s electoral processes, adding that it was time for the government to address issue of poverty, infrastructure and to ensure sustained democracy.

Earlier, the head the delegation Ambassador Arrion, has said that the union was much interested in the success of Nigeria’s democracy and its electoral process.

He said the EU has long years of collaboration and cooperation with the country that must be sustained for continental growth.

According to him, the EU since 1974, has developed more than 40 years of development cooperation and political dialogue in West African states, in particular.

He said the EU has also developed cooperation with some states of the federation, adding that EU, being a product of integration in Europe, believes in regional integration at both economic and political level.
