Rumpus in OPC, Fasheun removed

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) is currently facing a daunting challenge to its unity as the group’s founder, Dr Frederick Fasheun was removed and replaced by one Dare Adesope.

The congress yesterday announced its new leadership at a news conference addressed by its Secretary-General, Mr. Sola Ajayi alongside the new president and another leader of the group, Mr. Kazeem Lawal at the OPC secretariat, Lagos.

The congress noted that Fasheun had been in charge for two decades without keeping to the vision that led to the formation of the group, adding that the organisation was not established “to run monarchical system of government.”

At the conference, Ajayi said Fasheun “is no more the president of OPC and he was removed because of his irrepressible act and that it is high time the Yoruba leaders join force with the new leadership of the congress to move the region forward.”

He explained that the time has come for all Oodua descendants to embrace the congress, urging the Yoruba leaders not “to judge the OPC with the precedent of the past leader,” who was advised, but did not take to the admonition.

He, therefore, said the manner the congress would be managed under the new leadership “will be in consonance with the 1999 Constitution and that of the organisation unlike when we ran autocracy where one person took all the decision on behalf of the organisation without consulting the National Executive Council.”
