“So, to protect the Presidency, we must carefully separate the occupant who is destroying it and let the world see him for who he is.
Following President Goodluck Jonathan’s prediction that those decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to other parties were destined to return with empty stomachs, the ace lawyer and activist Festus Keyamo has lashed out at the president for what he termed as “an extremely careless utterance”.
According to the legal practitioner, President Jonathan’s statement indicates that the current government was all about the stomachs of those around him, Daily Post reports.
It will be recalled that President Jonathan, while receiving the PDP campaign report from the presidential campaign organisation at the presidential villa, said those who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the PDP would return hungry.
“Those people (PDP members) running and those already cross carpeting”, President Goodluck Jonathan was reported to have said, “will come back on an empty stomach because they (APC leaders) will touch the primary members of their party, before they get to you. They know you are coming because you are hungry. Before it will get to you, the food will be gone.”
However, reacting to the suggestion, Keyamo said, “My reaction the first day I heard the statement was that I immediately twitted through my twitter handle @fkeyamo that this clearly confirms that the Jonathan government and PDP were all about filling their stomachs.
“That was an extremely careless utterance by the President, but it contains a real suspicion of truth. By his utterances and his hackneyed approach to governance, Jonathan painted a picture of someone not fit to be a Local Government Chairman what more a bigger office. In as much as I want to respect the institution of the Presidency, the very person who occupies it is debasing it by his actions and utterances.
“My prayer is that may the circumstances that threw up a president who was never ready for that office never befalls us again.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party campaign organisation spokesperson, Femi Fani-Kayode will next month know his fate as regards the court case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and it was reported that Festus Keyamo urged the court to uphold the remaining two counts and to accordingly convict Fani-Kayode.
Festus Keyamo began his legal career in 1993 at Gani Fawehinmi’s Chambers in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. After he spent two years at Gani Fawehinmi’s chambers, he left to established Festus Keyamo Chambers.
