Reasons Rochas Okorocha's Opinion On Reduction Of National Assembly Members Should Be Considered

Former governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West Rochas Okorocha has said that the number of senators from each state should be reduced to one and three House of Representatives members per State, to reduce the cost of governance.

Daily Post reported that Okorocha made the call while interacting with members of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council in Abuja on Monday, also denied knowledge of how much, in particular, a Senator receives as basic salary or allowances every month. Senator Okorochas claims he has not received a dime as salary from the National Assembly since he was elected over two years ago. However, Senator Okorochas's opinion on a pay cut and reduction of National Assembly members should be given due consideration because of the following:

1 Saving:

Nigeria government will be able to save a huge amount of money going to Senators and House Representative Members who are contributing little or nothing to the development of their constituents. This money could be used to execute infrastructural projects, such as roads, electricity, pipe-born water supply, etc, across the country.

2. Effective Representation: If the number of National Assembly members is reduced to one and three per state as rightly suggested by Senator Okorocha, it will bring effective representation because each of them will be active during the plenaries, Moroso, they will be able to carry out oversight functions as timely as possible which is one of the basic functions of the legislature.

3. Cost of Election: the federal government often spends a lot of money to conduct National Assembly elections because of a large number. It will also help to reduce the workload of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Other Senators should support Senator Rochas Okorocha because of the above and other benefits Nigeria might get from the reduction of the number of National Assembly members
