The life of a public figure is like a billboard displayed at the market square. Everything about them remain forever in vogue. However, there are some things about them which are not just a clickaway. Something of such is this epic throwback photo of Adams Oshiomhole.
This picture was taken in 1986 when Adams Oshiomhole representing Kaduna state, received an award as the Second Best Tailor in Nigeria. What an incredible feat!
Adams was born about 6 decades ago in Edo state. After his secondary education, he secured a job with the Arewa Textiles Company, where he was elected union secretary. And in 1975, he became a full-time trade union organizer.
In 1982, Adams Oshiomhole was appointed General Secretary of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, a union with over 75,000 workers.
He lost his job shortly after and took up street to street sewing of torn clothes. This he used to sustain himself for a while before venturing into labour unionism as democracy came in. It was during this period that he received the award.
When democracy was restored in, he was appointed the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in 1999. It was during this time he made a plausible landmark for himself by negotiating a 25% wage increase for public sector workers. He really fought for the workers right during those period including the hike of oil prices.
Later in 2003, Textile union elected Oshiomhole for a second term as General Secretary, while he continued as president of NLC.
Oshiomhole in his vibrancy and gallantry represented African Workers for two terms on the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), serving on the committee on Freedom of Association. He was also a member of the Executive Board of the International Confederation of Free Trade Union.
In April 2007, Adams Oshiomhole ran for Governor of Edo State under the Action Congress Of Nigeria against Oserheimen Osunbor of the People's Democratic Party. He was later declared the winner in 2008. He re-contested in 2012 and was governor till 2016. In 2018 he was appointed the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adams Oshiomhole's story is indeed what they called from Grass to Grace. So inspiring!
