Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has expressed confidence in the ability of the incoming Muhammadu Buhari administration to deal with the nation’s educational challenges.
Gowon laid the charge on Saturday at the official commissioning of Bogoro Community Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria, located in Bogoro, Bauchi.
The BCSC, built by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund in collaboration with NOUN, is the 9th Community Study Centre in the country, bringing the number of NOUN study centres nationwide to 63.
Gowon, who was the Chairman of the occasion, commended the outgoing Jonathan government for leading the charge in making giant strides in education. He, however, called for an immediate overhaul of the education sector in the country by the incoming government.
In his words, “I commend and support the huge investment being focused on the Education sector by this present government and I hope the incoming government will do the same.
“This is why I greatly appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government, through TETFUND, in providing teaching and learning facilities for our colleges and universities.
“We must continue to work hard and restore the lost glory of our education system in the country especially the quality of our education.”
He added, “I know Buhari very well and I know he will do well to improve the Education sector in the country. We must focus on raising men and women of sound character and good reputation.”
The elder statesman, who lamented the loss of values among the nation’s youths, said young people should seek good character in their studies.
“Seek not education but also excel in learning, education and character,” he advised.
